March 21st Mother's Day over here and at my school we did it up big. A few week prior the children learned two songs, one in Arabic and one in both English and Arabic. They also made cards. The principal ordered presents for each mother and had the cleaners put together cute packages of chocolates. Today we had a special breakfast, it's really lunch I don't know why they call it breakfast but I digress...we had a special breakfast with the Mothers. The excitement is the air was beautiful. Every mother in the school, staff and parents, received gifts..including me. Yup. They told me it's for the future children I will have. They are so concerned that I'm not married with at least 2 children yet lol but it was very sweet. Everyone ate, the kids sang, presented gifts to their mothers, and played for the rest of the day. As the children played the music teacher sang several songs about mother and there were tears from several staff members. No one outgrows their Mommy.
The fun really began at 12:30 though. After the kids left these ladies let their hair down-literally. I saw abayas fly open or hiked up and shaylas(the scarf they wear on their heads) come off. The music teacher had Arabic music playing and the PE teacher started bellydancing. The entire staff and the mothers who stayed were in the assembly area having a wonderful time. I even got up and shocked them. They invited me to dance and I believe they thought I would be stiff ha! I helde my own and when the song was over I was dubbed Arabic lol I told the I'm African what did you expect? lol I was so amused to see one mother who is also a principal at another school kick off her shoes, take off her shayla, tie it around her waist and take over the dance floor lol It was a wonderful gathering. The funniest part is I originally went into the assembly area to talk to my Arabic KG teachers about work stuff. I even connected with two girls that are my age and we're going to hang out and I'll teach them English and they'll teach me Arabic. An overall good day!
One more day till spring break!! Lookout for updates from my upcoming trip to southern Turkey!
